The SORT — June 15: Drexel's $112M Scholarship Gift
Two stories shaping who gets to attend college and how they pay for it.
Drexel Receives Record $112.6M Gift — $76M Directed to Scholarships
The Howley Foundation, the family nonprofit of Drexel alumnus and trustee Nick Howley, his wife Lorie, and daughter Meg, committed $112.6 million to Drexel University on June 11 — the largest gift in the school's history by more than double the previous record. More than $76 million will fund the Howley College Scholars program, providing scholarships for students from Philadelphia and Cleveland area schools regardless of financial background; at least half will study in the new Nick Howley College of Engineering and Computing. The remaining $36 million will build more than 55,000 square feet of new labs and classrooms.
Why it matters: Students from Philadelphia and Cleveland interested in engineering or computing should watch for this scholarship program — the gift is designed for students who may not otherwise afford a Drexel education.

House Committee Moves to Give Nursing Students Higher Loan Caps
The House Appropriations Committee advanced a fiscal year 2027 spending bill on June 12 that would direct the Education Department to classify advanced nursing programs — including nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, nurse-midwife, and nurse anesthetist degrees — as professional programs. That shift would double nursing students' federal borrowing limit from $20,500 per year to $50,000 per year, matching limits set for law, medicine, and dentistry under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The provision is unlikely to become law before July 1, when the current caps take effect.
Why it matters: Graduate nursing students starting after July 1 face the lower $20,500 annual cap for now — contact your program's financial aid office to understand what federal funding covers and what private alternatives exist.
