American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association Ahepa Memorial Scholarship

Before you spend hours on this

Will this scholarship actually lower your cost?

Not always. Many colleges reduce your financial-aid package when you win an outside scholarship — sometimes dollar-for-dollar — so the money can end up saving the school instead of you. It's called scholarship displacement. Two free tools tell you where you actually stand:

General guidance, not financial advice — your school's financial aid office is the only authority on how they treat outside awards. Always confirm with them before deciding.

Best fit for

Greek-American students at any college level. Particularly strong fit if your family is already AHEPA-connected (parent or grandparent member) — these legacy applicants get strong consideration.

What they actually look for

AHEPA is the largest Greek-American fraternal organization in the US and runs one of the longest-established heritage scholarships (since the 1920s). Award sizes range from $1,000 to $7,500 across ~40 named scholarships. The local-chapter membership requirement filters most applicants — but it's a low-friction filter that can be solved by joining your nearest chapter in October of senior year. Many chapters waive dues for student-applicants who can't pay.

What you'll need

  • Greek-American heritage (one or both parents/grandparents of Greek origin)
  • Currently enrolled in OR planning to attend an accredited US college
  • Member of AHEPA, Daughters of Penelope, Sons of Pericles, or Maids of Athena — local chapter membership ($30-50/yr)
  • Strong academic record (most winners are top 10-15%)
  • Essays on Greek heritage, academics, and goals
  • Two recommendations

When to start

Find your nearest AHEPA chapter on ahepa.org and join in October of senior year. National scholarship application opens January, closes March 31. Some local chapter awards have separate deadlines (typically earlier).

Watch out for

The local-chapter requirement is real but flexible — if there's no chapter near you, contact AHEPA national (they have rules for unsponsored applicants). Also: AHEPA scholarships at the NATIONAL level are separate from CHAPTER-level scholarships. Apply for both — chapter awards have smaller applicant pools and better odds.
