Bezos Scholars Program
Before you spend hours on this
Will this scholarship actually lower your cost?
Not always. Many colleges reduce your financial-aid package when you win an outside scholarship — sometimes dollar-for-dollar — so the money can end up saving the school instead of you. It's called scholarship displacement. Two free tools tell you where you actually stand:
General guidance, not financial advice — your school's financial aid office is the only authority on how they treat outside awards. Always confirm with them before deciding.
Best fit for
HS JUNIORS with clear community-leadership track record (founded a nonprofit, run a youth mentoring program, organized a major civic project) — and the writing chops to articulate it. NOT for kids without sustained community impact.
What they actually look for
Bezos Scholars selects ~12 HS juniors per year (one per state typically, plus international) for an ALL-EXPENSES-PAID trip to the Aspen Ideas Festival in summer + a yearlong leadership-and-community-action coaching program. There's no cash scholarship — what you get is the EXPERIENCE + the network. Past Bezos Scholars have included future congressional staffers, Rhodes Scholars, social entrepreneurship founders. The credential on senior-year college apps is enormous.
What you'll need
- Current HS JUNIOR (this is a junior-year program — seniors are not eligible)
- Strong academic record (top 10% typical) + demonstrated community leadership
- Demonstrated commitment to community change or social entrepreneurship
- Multiple essays on leadership, community impact, and vision
- Recommendation from a teacher AND a community leader / mentor
- Apply via the Aspen Institute (which administers Bezos Scholars)
When to start
Application opens January of JUNIOR year, closes mid-March. Selected Scholars attend Aspen Ideas Festival in June. Yearlong program runs through senior year.
Watch out for
Strict junior-year eligibility — seniors cannot apply. Also: this requires SIGNIFICANT TIME COMMITMENT during senior year (community action project, monthly mentor calls, etc.) — so don't apply if you don't have bandwidth on top of senior-year college apps + AP exams. Bezos Scholars who can't complete the program lose the credential.
