Hispanic Heritage Foundation Youth Awards
Before you spend hours on this
Will this scholarship actually lower your cost?
Not always. Many colleges reduce your financial-aid package when you win an outside scholarship — sometimes dollar-for-dollar — so the money can end up saving the school instead of you. It's called scholarship displacement. Two free tools tell you where you actually stand:
General guidance, not financial advice — your school's financial aid office is the only authority on how they treat outside awards. Always confirm with them before deciding.
Best fit for
Hispanic/Latino HS seniors with strong academic + leadership records, particularly those active in Hispanic community work or cultural preservation. Compatible with HSF (Hispanic Scholarship Fund) — apply to both, they don't conflict.
What they actually look for
HHF Youth Awards select ~60 'Gold Medalists' annually who win $4,000 to $7,000 each + invitation to a recognition gala + ongoing HHF alumni programming. Winners are recognized in 8 categories: Education, STEM, Arts & Entertainment, Business & Finance, Healthcare, Sports, Engineering, and Hispanic Cultural Heritage. This is DIFFERENT from HHF's separate STEM Award (also worth applying to separately) — Youth Awards is the broader leadership recognition.
What you'll need
- Hispanic / Latino heritage (any sub-heritage — Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, South/Central American, etc.)
- HS senior (graduating in the upcoming spring) — domestic US students
- Strong academic record + leadership / community involvement
- Multiple essays on Hispanic identity, achievement, and goals
- Two recommendations
- Apply via the HHF Youth Awards portal at hispanicheritage.org
When to start
Application opens September of senior year, closes November-December. Awards announced spring. Recognition gala in May.
Watch out for
The Youth Awards categories are competitive separately — apply for the ONE category that best matches your strengths (don't spread thin across multiple). Each category has ~5-8 winners nationally. Also: HHF's STEM Award is a SEPARATE program with its own application — apply to both if you're STEM-bound.
