Hosa Future Health Professionals Scholarships

Before you spend hours on this

Will this scholarship actually lower your cost?

Not always. Many colleges reduce your financial-aid package when you win an outside scholarship — sometimes dollar-for-dollar — so the money can end up saving the school instead of you. It's called scholarship displacement. Two free tools tell you where you actually stand:

General guidance, not financial advice — your school's financial aid office is the only authority on how they treat outside awards. Always confirm with them before deciding.

Best fit for

Health-career-bound HS students at a HOSA-chapter school. NOT a fit for kids at schools without HOSA chapters — start by checking with your school's career-and-technical-education teacher whether you have a chapter or can start one.

What they actually look for

HOSA awards $500-$5,000 across 30+ named scholarships through ONE application — and HOSA also runs major COMPETITIONS (Health Career Display, Medical Math, etc.) where competition winners receive additional scholarship money. Active HOSA members who place in regional/state/national competitions can stack competition prizes + scholarship awards into $10,000+ totals for the strongest competitors.

What you'll need

  • Active HOSA (Future Health Professionals) member in your high school chapter — joining typically costs $10-25 through your HS chapter
  • Plan to pursue a health-related career: nursing, pre-med, allied health, public health, dentistry, etc.
  • Strong academic record + active HOSA competition / leadership participation
  • Essays on health-career goals + HOSA involvement
  • Two recommendations (one from a HOSA advisor)
  • Apply through HOSA's central scholarship portal — ONE app routes to multiple awards

When to start

Join HOSA in 9th or 10th grade. Participate in HOSA competitions throughout HS. National scholarship application opens January of senior year, closes mid-March.

Watch out for

If your school doesn't have a HOSA chapter, you can start one — but the process takes a semester. For a senior who just discovered HOSA, your alternative is the Health Professions Education Foundation (HPEF) state-level scholarships, or major-specific awards (Nursing, Pre-Med, Allied Health). Don't try to retroactively claim 4 years of HOSA on your application.
