Knights Of Columbus Pro Deo Et Pro Patria Scholarship
Before you spend hours on this
Will this scholarship actually lower your cost?
Not always. Many colleges reduce your financial-aid package when you win an outside scholarship — sometimes dollar-for-dollar — so the money can end up saving the school instead of you. It's called scholarship displacement. Two free tools tell you where you actually stand:
General guidance, not financial advice — your school's financial aid office is the only authority on how they treat outside awards. Always confirm with them before deciding.
Best fit for
Practicing Catholic students attending Catholic colleges, particularly those with a K of C parent/grandparent (legacy preference is real). Catholic students attending NON-Catholic colleges should look at the Catholic Scholarship Fund for the Negro, the Italian Catholic Federation, or local diocesan awards instead.
What they actually look for
K of C runs MULTIPLE named scholarships (Pro Deo et Pro Patria, John W. McDevitt Memorial, Daniel J. Stevens Memorial, others) — ONE application qualifies you for all eligibility-matching awards. Typical award is $1,500 to $2,500 per year, renewable for up to 4 years. The Catholic-college requirement filters the applicant pool significantly — so the per-hour ROI for kids attending Catholic colleges is strong.
What you'll need
- Active Catholic faith (Knights of Columbus is a Catholic fraternal organization)
- Plan to attend a Catholic college or university (Notre Dame, Holy Cross, Catholic University of America, Marquette, Villanova, Boston College, etc.)
- Son, daughter, or grandchild of a Knight of Columbus member in good standing (most awards) OR an active member yourself
- Strong academic record (most winners are top 15-20%)
- Essays on faith, service, academics, and goals
- Two recommendations (one from a Knights of Columbus member or parish priest)
When to start
Application opens January of senior year, closes mid-April. Notification June-July. Re-apply annually for renewal — not automatic.
Watch out for
If your K of C connection is through a grandparent or uncle (not parent), you can STILL apply — but you'll need their council number + good-standing verification. Get that information from them in October of senior year, not at the April deadline. Also: the Catholic-college requirement is strict for most K of C awards — non-Catholic college attendees should look at other Catholic scholarships (Knights of Columbus Insurance Scholarships, for example, don't require Catholic-college attendance).
