National Football Foundation Nff Scholar Athlete Award

Before you spend hours on this

Will this scholarship actually lower your cost?

Not always. Many colleges reduce your financial-aid package when you win an outside scholarship — sometimes dollar-for-dollar — so the money can end up saving the school instead of you. It's called scholarship displacement. Two free tools tell you where you actually stand:

General guidance, not financial advice — your school's financial aid office is the only authority on how they treat outside awards. Always confirm with them before deciding.

Best fit for

HS football players with strong academic records and leadership/service work. Particularly good fit for kids playing at the NCAA D-III, D-II, or non-football academic schools (Ivy League, NESCAC) where direct athletic scholarships don't exist but NFF is recognized.

What they actually look for

NFF Scholar-Athlete is the most prestigious football-academic award outside of the actual football-recruiting pipeline. ~165 winners per year nationally; awards range from $5,000 to $25,000 depending on level (chapter / sectional / national). It DOES NOT require you to be a top-recruit — the application explicitly weighs character + academics + community impact equally with on-field stats. A 3.8-GPA second-string player who's the team captain and runs a youth football clinic for elementary kids will out-place a 3.0-GPA all-state running back.

What you'll need

  • HS senior who plays competitive football (varsity at school OR equivalent)
  • Minimum 3.2 GPA + 25 ACT or 1200 SAT (most winners are 3.7+ + higher tests)
  • Demonstrated leadership beyond football — student government, service, captaincy
  • Multiple essays on football, academics, character, service
  • Recommendation from head football coach
  • Athletic statistics and football résumé

When to start

Application opens September of senior year, closes mid-December (deadlines vary by NFF chapter). Find your local chapter at footballfoundation.org. Local chapter winners advance to sectional and national competition.

Watch out for

NFF chapters run on staggered schedules — your local chapter might have an October deadline even though the national-level competition runs January-April. Apply locally FIRST. Also: this is NOT a recruiting tool — winning doesn't connect you to college football coaches. It's recognized academic-football merit, not athletic recruiting.
