What they actually look for
Phi Theta Kappa is the SECRET WEAPON for community college kids transferring to 4-year schools. 700+ partner universities offer PTK-EXCLUSIVE transfer scholarships ranging from $1,000 to FULL-RIDE. Some are auto-awarded just for being a PTK member (Arizona State, Texas A&M, Tennessee, several SUNY schools), others require additional application. If you're at CC and not in PTK, joining is the single highest-leverage move for your transfer year.
What you'll need
- Current community college student (or planning to attend) — PTK is for 2-year college students specifically
- PTK membership at your community college (~$80 one-time fee — you must be invited by your CC after maintaining a 3.5+ GPA for one semester)
- Transfer to a 4-year college planned within the eligibility window
- Essays on your CC experience and transfer goals
- Two recommendations

When to start
Join PTK in your FIRST semester of CC after hitting 3.5 GPA. Look up your target 4-year transfer schools on PTK's transfer scholarship database (ptk.org) and check each one's specific PTK award + deadline.
Watch out for
PTK membership lasts 4 years from join date, but some transfer scholarships require you to be 'current' at transfer time — re-confirm membership status if you joined as a freshman and are transferring as a junior. Also: the PTK Hites Transfer Fellowship is a SEPARATE 4-year $10,000/yr award (40 winners/yr) — apply for that on top of school-specific PTK awards.
