Robertson Scholars Leadership Program Duke Unc

Before you spend hours on this

Will this scholarship actually lower your cost?

Not always. Many colleges reduce your financial-aid package when you win an outside scholarship — sometimes dollar-for-dollar — so the money can end up saving the school instead of you. It's called scholarship displacement. Two free tools tell you where you actually stand:

General guidance, not financial advice — your school's financial aid office is the only authority on how they treat outside awards. Always confirm with them before deciding.

Multiple essays8-15 hours

Best fit for

Top-tier students with both academic record (4.0 unweighted, 1550+ SAT typical) AND major leadership impact at the regional or national level. NOT for kids who are 'just' good students.

What they actually look for

Robertson is one of the most prestigious full-ride scholarships in the country — covers tuition, room/board, books, plus 3 funded summers (research, service, study abroad). They pick ~30/yr from 5,000+ applicants. They want kids who would also win the Rhodes or Marshall later — the bar is THAT high. If you're not also a credible Davidson Fellows or top-100 nationally on something, this is a stretch.

What you'll need

  • Apply to BOTH Duke AND UNC (separate university applications first)
  • Top-of-class academic record AND meaningful leadership track record
  • Multiple essays + recommendations + supplemental materials
  • Available for finalist weekend interviews in March (at both Duke + UNC campuses)

When to start

Apply to Duke + UNC (their normal admissions) by their regular deadlines. Robertson nomination/application happens IN PARALLEL — separate Robertson application due around the same time as the universities' deadlines.

Watch out for

You commit to one or the other school based on Robertson selection — your university admission and Robertson selection are decoupled, so check both timelines. The interview weekend is intense (2-3 days at both campuses).
