Uncf General Scholarship

Before you spend hours on this

Will this scholarship actually lower your cost?

Not always. Many colleges reduce your financial-aid package when you win an outside scholarship — sometimes dollar-for-dollar — so the money can end up saving the school instead of you. It's called scholarship displacement. Two free tools tell you where you actually stand:

General guidance, not financial advice — your school's financial aid office is the only authority on how they treat outside awards. Always confirm with them before deciding.

Best fit for

Black HS seniors with demonstrated financial need (FAFSA SAI in the Pell range or close to it). The largest awards target HBCU-bound students; others fund Black students at any accredited college.

What they actually look for

UNCF is the umbrella that runs 400+ named scholarships from corporate sponsors (Walmart First-Gen, Koch Scholars, Boeing, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs HBCU Possibilities, etc.). Apply through UNCF's general portal — they match you to all the named awards you're eligible for. One application, dozens of consideration paths.

What you'll need

  • Identify as African American / Black
  • 2.5+ GPA
  • FAFSA + financial documentation
  • Personal essay (varies by specific UNCF award)
  • Recommendation letters
  • US citizen / national / permanent resident

When to start

Their portal stays open year-round, but most named awards have deadlines Nov-April. Get the application live and updated by November so you're in for the maximum number of awards.

Watch out for

Many UNCF awards have specific majors, GPAs, or geographic eligibility — your match list won't include every scholarship. Don't get discouraged — even matching 5 is unusually good.
