University Of Alabama Foundation Scholarship
Before you spend hours on this
Will this scholarship actually lower your cost?
Not always. Many colleges reduce your financial-aid package when you win an outside scholarship — sometimes dollar-for-dollar — so the money can end up saving the school instead of you. It's called scholarship displacement. Two free tools tell you where you actually stand:
General guidance, not financial advice — your school's financial aid office is the only authority on how they treat outside awards. Always confirm with them before deciding.
Best fit for
High-stats out-of-state students (especially from the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, or West Coast) who want to attend a flagship public for under $15K/yr and aren't picky about the SEC sports school vibe. Honors College adds smaller classes + research opportunities.
What they actually look for
Alabama is one of the LAST major flagship universities to publish AUTOMATIC merit-scholarship thresholds — meaning if you hit the numbers, you GET the money. No essays, no interviews, no luck. For out-of-state high-stats applicants, the Foundation tier can be FULL tuition + room + book stipend, making Bama cheaper than most kids' in-state options. The downside: you have to actually want to go to Bama for 4 years.
What you'll need
- Apply to the University of Alabama by December 15 (priority scholarship deadline)
- Specific GPA + test score combination — Bama has PUBLISHED automatic thresholds (the holy grail for high-stats applicants)
- Out-of-state applicants face DIFFERENT thresholds than in-state — non-resident merit is more generous
- Foundation Scholarship awarded to top-tier auto-qualifiers: 3.5+ GPA + 30+ ACT or 1360+ SAT (numbers may shift annually — check ua.edu)
- Optional Honors College application for additional consideration
- Submit FAFSA for need-stacking
When to start
Apply by Dec 15 (priority deadline) with final SAT/ACT scores submitted. Awards are auto-issued in admit packets in January-March based on the official thresholds.
Watch out for
The thresholds CAN shift year-over-year as Bama recalibrates — don't assume yesterday's numbers hold. Check ua.edu/admissions/scholarships in the summer before senior year. Also: Bama has been gradually TIGHTENING out-of-state merit (other flagships followed their playbook and Bama can no longer be uniquely cheap forever). This window of generous OOS merit may shrink — apply while it's still wide.
