Will this scholarship actually lower your cost?
Not always. Many colleges reduce your financial-aid package when you win an outside scholarship — sometimes dollar-for-dollar — so the money can end up saving the school instead of you. It's called scholarship displacement. Two free tools tell you where you actually stand:

Best fit for
Top 1% students for whom UVA would be a clear top choice. Don't apply for Jefferson if UVA is your 'safety' — they screen for genuine fit, and you'll waste the slot.
What they actually look for
Jefferson is looking for the 'whole package' — academic excellence + leadership + character + intellectual curiosity. Selection Weekend is famously brutal: ~120 semifinalists compete for ~40 spots through interviews, group exercises, and faculty conversations. They want kids who can hold their own in a Socratic seminar on day 2 of interviewing on 5 hours of sleep. Practice articulating WHY you care about ideas, not just what you've achieved.
What you'll need
- Your HIGH SCHOOL counselor's nomination — free, part of their job, not a paid consultant
- Apply Early Action to UVA by Oct 15 (Jefferson requires it)
- Top-of-class academics (most semifinalists are top 5% of class with 1500+ SAT or 34+ ACT)
- Multiple essays specific to the Jefferson program — separate from UVA app
- Selection Weekend on UVA campus (March, all expenses paid) — semifinalists invited
- Finalist interview round
When to start
Talk to your high school counselor in August/September of senior year. Apply Early Action to UVA by Oct 15. Jefferson semifinalist notifications come December; Selection Weekend is in March.
Watch out for
If your high school isn't a Jefferson-partner school, your counselor can still nominate you directly through the Jefferson Scholars Foundation portal — but they need to know about the program. Bring jeffersonscholars.org to your counselor early. Also: declining Selection Weekend invitation forfeits consideration, even if it falls on AP test prep or another scholarship's finals — schedule accordingly.
