Voice Of Democracy Vfw
Before you spend hours on this
Will this scholarship actually lower your cost?
Not always. Many colleges reduce your financial-aid package when you win an outside scholarship — sometimes dollar-for-dollar — so the money can end up saving the school instead of you. It's called scholarship displacement. Two free tools tell you where you actually stand:
General guidance, not financial advice — your school's financial aid office is the only authority on how they treat outside awards. Always confirm with them before deciding.
Best fit for
Students comfortable speaking on recorded audio, with some perspective to share on the year's theme (varies annually — civic/patriotic).
What they actually look for
VFW Voice of Democracy is the largest student audio-essay scholarship in the US — $4M+ in awards each year. Winners are picked at post → district → state → national levels. The big national prize is $35K but ~155 winners get $1K+. Apply locally — your local VFW post handles the entry.
What you'll need
- Be in grades 9-12
- Record a 3-5 minute audio essay on the annual patriotic theme
- Submit through your local VFW post
- Be a US citizen
When to start
August-September of school year. Most local deadlines are October 31. Theme is announced in summer.
Watch out for
It's an AUDIO essay (recorded, not typed). Production value matters less than content, but recording quality should be clear. Use any standard phone — don't overthink the equipment.
